On the heels of a cold mid-February, the area weather leveled off in late February and through the month of March. The average temperature for March in Broadus was 41.4 degrees, or 5.1 degrees above normal. The low for the month fell on March 19th, with a reading of 16 while the high for the month was 72, on March 28th. Art & Soul gathered recently for a recap of 2020 and to plan for the coming year. Attending the meeting were Kathy Heidel, Laura Lee Ullrich, Ronda Gatlin and Lana Smith. Although inconvenienced by the pandemic, Art & Soul managed to have a successful year. In the 8-week Steps for Charity Challenge, it was Jackie Walden, Peggy Kolka, Lori Dinstel and Louise Wilson, The New "40", who came in first with 3.3 million steps. The Broadus Cancer Fund was the charity they chose to receive their $270 award for winning first place. Wilson had a goal of 1 million steps and WALKED extra to get it done. Easter Egg Hunt - The Broadus First Grade and Kindergarten classes searched the Courthouse lawn for Easter Eggs last Thursday. The classes took time to count their loot, and hitch a ride to and from the Courthouse with the Broadus Volunteer Fire Department's fire trucks. The hulking skeleton of a semi lies along Highway 212 near the pumping station between Hammond and Alzada, in the picture below taken last week. Reports indicated a blown tire started the fire, which then consumed the truck and trailer along with four acres of pastureland before the flames were stopped by the Alzada Volunteer Fire Deparment and local ranchers. COLSTRIP, MONT. – The Glendive District Bridge Preservation Project will evaluate 11 bridges in southeastern Montana for rehabilitation, impacting a state highway (S 39), US highways (US 212 and US 12), the interstate (I 94), and the communities of Forsyth, Colstrip, Lame Deer, Broadus, Ashland, and the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation. Starting April 1, 2021, all Montanans aged 16 years and older can receive a state-allocated COVID-19 vaccine. A drive up COVID vaccine clinic will be held at the Broadus Fairgrounds on April 10th, from 11 AM-2 PM. Newly hired Sheriff's Department Deputy Glacier Rohrer donned the badge for Powder River County last week, continuing a career in law enforcement that has brought him across the country and back again. Rohrer grew up in Valdez, Alaska, a town of around 4000 located at the terminus of the Trans-Alaska pipeline, on Prince William Sound. For one, Ashley Hubler is the director of the Center, and she has great vision and enthusiasm for both recycling and the Center itself. On February 7 Powder River Rising Stars held a meeting. We discussed demonstrations. The club got to see one of the name plaques for the new road sign our club purchased. After the meeting we made Valentine's Day cards for the residents at the Manor. On March 9 Powder River Rising Stars held a meeting.
