    July 22, 1921 Homestake Doing Local Coal Work Joe Marengo, accompanied by another man, arrived Monday night from Lead, S.D., to work at the Sand Creek coal bank this summer in the interests of the Homestake Mining Company. He brought with him a supply of tools and is prepared to stay until fall. It is said that Marengo will improve the roadway from John Rogge’s place to the mine, making it more accessible for teams and wagons.   • Commissioners Will Move To 3/4 Pay

    A pair of meetings on Monday set the elected official salaries in Powder River County. In a morning meeting, the commissioners voted on a motion which would reduce their full-time pay from 100% to 75%. The motion included an exception that if there is a dissenting vote, the commissioner that votes nay will be grandfathered in until the end of their term, with the change to ¾ pay taking effect for that position at the beginning of the next term in office, which would be January 1 of 2023.     By Jaeger Held This month, July 2021, marks the 100th anniversary of the burial of the last Civil War veteran in Powder River County, Montana. Pvt. John Helman, Company D, 178th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment (Drafted Militia), died in July 1921 and was buried at the Bowers Creek Cemetery nine miles southwest of Biddle. Helman was living in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania when he was drafted as a substitute into the 178th Pennsylvania Infantry, and he mustered in on November 4, 1862, in...

    With low amounts of precipitation and hot temperatures, June of 2021 pushed the majority of Powder River County into a severe drought, as measured by US Drought Monitor. The 0.58” of rain which fell in Broadus in June made for the third driest June on record, with the record low of 0.40” in June of 2004, and 0.50” in 2006. Data is missing for the 1930s, which very well may have been drier, but the Ekalaka Eagle recently reported that June of 2021 was also the third driest in Ekalaka, where data through the 1930s is complete (their data for 1931...

    ELLSWORTH AIR FORCE BASE, South Dakota – Combat Raider, a military training exercise involving various aircraft, is scheduled to begin July 19 in the Powder River Training Complex (PRTC) and will conclude on July 23, 2021.     A truck wreck on Hwy 212 just west of Epsie on July 1st resulted in the death of a 64 year old woman, identified as Debra Sloan of Texas. Local emergency responders including the Broadus VFD, ambulance crew, and Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call at 10:37 in the morning to the incident. The wreck is believed to have been caused by a blown front left tire on the semi, resulting in the truck leaving the road and turning onto its passenger side. On July 1, the Box Elder fire, located near the Camp Creek Road in NW Powder River County burned 1700 acres, with federal, state, and local resources responding to the incident.
