December 2, 1921 Benge Fires First Gun for Railroad Dave J. Benge, one of the prosperous farmers at Coalwood in the northern part of Powder River County, fires the first gun for a railroad to build to this county. As an inducement Benge promises $1 an acre for his entire section of land with the money to be payable when the road starts operation.
