    Dec 16, 2021

The monthly meeting of the Broadus School Board Trustees took place in the auditorium at the high school on Monday evening, with the matter of sportsmanship shown by fans at sporting events forming a central topic for the evening. Earlier this fall a situation arose during two football games where Broadus fans were taunting and/or cussing at the refs, and in the case of the final home game, partially in response to the coach and players being ejected from the game. Broadus fans have not been the only fans causing problems at sporting events...

  • Rankin's Barn Burner In Broadus

    Dec 16, 2021

My previous column described the violent back-and-forth between stock inspectors and a gang of livestock rustlers in southeast Montana. Much of the excitement was instigated by stock detective Billy Richardson or "Poker" Jim Roberts, suspected ringleader of the rustlers in the summer of 1921. Richardson sent a report to his boss, Montana's Chief Livestock Inspector Frank Lavigne, describing a day-long shootout with Roberts in southern Carter County. The situation came to attention of the newly...

    Dec 16, 2021

By Powder River Public Health Nurse Darlynn Williams After record breaking months in September and October that each had (55) positive COVID-19 cases in Powder River County, November brought a significant lower number of cases, which gives us hope of continued low numbers of infections during the holiday season. The emergence of the Omicron variant is concerning, and it will take some time for CDC and others to begin to answer questions about this variant. • November Weather Was Warm And Dry

    Dec 16, 2021

The weather in Broadus during the month of November was warm and dry, making for pleasant conditions for ranchers but tough hunting for those looking to fill their tags on the ever dwindling mule deer population of Southeast Montana. Broadus received a paltry 0.01” of precipitation in November, which compares to the normal monthly total of 0.47”. Lest one think that this month was out of the ordinary, on four separate years in the weather records at Broadus dating back to 1920 (save August 1925 to December 1936, the records of which were lost d...

By JH Volleyball Coach Raevyn Slovek After finishing the high school season I was finally able to watch our games and take accurate stats. It was nice to revisit the season and remember why this group of young ladies make me so proud! COVID continued to show its ugly face to us this season. Several girls were placed in quarantine or sick throughout the season, but as individuals and as a team they pushed through and still made great improvements. We had quite a few that had never played the game before and I am quite impressed with how far...

  • Superintendent's Report

    Dec 16, 2021

By Broadus Schools Superintendent Jim Hansen A couple months ago I gave a short presentation to trustees discussing the importance of recognizing we are in the “service” profession. Therefore, I thought it would be an appropriate time to discuss the importance of community service to both your school and community. Our school and community are very fortunate to offer a wide array of services. A number of these services are run with strictly volunteers or with very minimal financial compensation. As our population decreases so does the num...
