    With the general hunting season drawing to a close the weekend after Thanksgiving, we wanted to take a look back on the season, sharing our observations and what we garnered from talking to locals and hunters.     The Broadus Hawk Wrestling season got underway last weekend at the Sidney Eagle Invitational, which featured 27 teams from as far flung locales as California and Colorado, and many large Montana and North Dakota schools.     November on the whole was colder than average in Powder River County in 2022, with below average precipitation recorded across the area. The month began mildly, with a high of 74 recorded in Broadus on November 2nd. Conditions continued to be mild into the second week of the month, where the thermometer dipped down below zero for two nights, recording a low of -7 on Veteran’s Day, and accompanied with a storm bringing a few inches of snow accumulation.     Charles J. Barbero, Sr. was born at the family ranch on Duncan Creek on September 15, 1926. He passed away in Broadus, Montana on December 1, 2022, at the age of 96. His daughter, Patti was by his side when he went quietly of old age. His parents, John and Mary (Chiesa) Barbero were original homesteaders in that part of Carter county.     Slug was born in Broadus, Montana in 1943, to Jack C. and Margaret (Williams) Mills. He was a large baby and the doctor commented “he’s a helluva slug”. The nickname stuck. From an early age he worked on his family’s ranch. Work was important to Slug. One of his first jobs, away from the ranch, was herding sheep for Lawrence Capra. He earned a hefty 50 cents a day.     Joey Williams of Volborg placed 6th at the Wrangler National Finals Breakaway Roping last week, in Las Vegas. Williams won Round 7 of the event with a 1.9 second performance. Cadee Williams of Weatherford, Texas was the overall winner. Williams horse, Baybe, which was raised on the family ranch and trained by Williams’ husband, Taylor, won the Nutrena Horse of the Year Award.
