By Joe Stuver Other than perhaps a wish for more moisture, November, 2018 was a pretty fine month. The elections were over on November 5, ending months of negative campaign ads and rhetoric. The last Sunday of the month also marked the end of hunting season, and the many irritations it brings to landowners and others. It was actually a pretty good hunting season for most, with antelope, whitetail and elk numbers soaring, despite the terrible winter months and on into spring. Mule deer numbers...
The Broadus Hawk wrestling team traveled to their first tournament of the season, last weekend in Sidney. The tournament, according to Broadus Head Coach Frankie Schoonover, is one of if not the toughest tournament of the season for his team. Twenty four teams from four states attended the tournament, including teams from North Dakota, Montana, Idaho, and Washington. Adding to the difficulty is the fact that for 4 of the 6 Broadus wrestlers who traveled to Sidney, this would be their first taste of a wrestling match. On Friday, a dual tourney...
Clerk of District Court Aletta Shannon is currently recovering from a stroke, and plans to return to work when possible. In the meantime, Vanna Byrd has taken over Aletta’s Clerk duties. The office will be open during normal hours, and folks may still come in with court related issues, to apply for a passport, or to convey to Aletta their get well cards. We here at The Examiner wish Aletta the best in recovery; she is truly a wonderful lady!...
Now that the local big game hunting season has been put to bed for the year, we figured a wrap up of the season was in order. From talking to folks around the county, the first phrase on everyone’s lips tended to be something along the lines of “There were a lot of hunters.” With good game numbers in the area, a world record bull elk taken in 2016 near Birney, and Montana FWP’s hunting outlooks saying to go east and south for game, our area continues to fill up with hunters. This sentiment was echoed by Broadus area FWP Biologist Ryan DeVore,...
Despite the rainy conditions, locals enjoyed the food, festivities, and friendship of the Broadus Christmas Stroll last Friday, sponsored by the Powder River Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture....
(PR Extension) Have you had any medical expenses so far this this year that weren’t covered by your health insurance policy, a flexible spending account (FSA) or your Federal Health Care Savings Account (HSA)? If so, you can still open a Montana Medical Care Savings Account (MSA) by Dec. 31 and cover those expenses. If you deposit up to $3,500, (the maximum in 2018) you can reduce your Montana adjusted gross income by that amount. Doing so will result in a tax savings of about $242 that is, if you have taxable income above $17,900. “This is...

By executive order, the President gave all non-essential Federal employees this Wednesday off, to mourn for former President George H.W. Bush, following his passing. This included most of the US Postal Service. The order didn’t come through until Monday, which meant shipping for some of the newspapers was thrown off a day, not to mention severely altering a lot of other shipping and federal work schedules....

The arrival of inclement, wintery weather has provided a source of endless calls for local law enforcement, ambulance, and fire department services, as they respond to the myriad vehicle wrecks on icy roads. The incidents kicked off around the 7th of November, when the first somewhat major storm of the season rolled through, coating the highways over the divides in ice. A rollover incident just past the weigh station resulted from icy roads, with no injuries. Montana Highway Patrolman Matt...

The Tongue River Cross Roads 4-H club is off to a great start. We elected officers. Casey Knobloch made an awesome video about what we like about 4-H. She interviewed all of us. This video was shown at Ashland Public and St. Labre schools. We wrote notes, drew pictures, and gathered treats for two care packages. One was for a college freshman and the other was for a young adult in the military. We are looking forward to our December meeting!...

By Karena Appleman I had the privilege of attending National 4-H Congress during Thanksgiving weekend in Atlanta Georgia, thanks to MT 4-H, our local 4-H Council and Teen 4-H. There were 15 delegates from Montana, including myself, and a total of 44 states and Puerto Rico represented at Congress. To attend, we each had to win an award or contest at the state level of 4-H. During the 5 days of our stay we saw as much of Atlanta as we could. From a Waffle House, Capitol Building, Coca Cola Factory...
(PR Extension) Who would think the topic of tax preparation could be interesting and exciting? Missy Billing, CPA of Gardner and Billing, captivated and engaged participants of Annie’s Project earlier this week, according to Powder River Extension Agent Mary Rumph. In the fifth week of Annie’s Project, a program designed to empower women in agriculture through financial knowledge and skill development, Billing explained that tax preparation works best if done throughout the year. Billing asked participants to match definitions of tax terms...

Thursday, December 8, 1988 Over 100 protest Brewer Ranch purchase at local hearing Between 100 and 150 Powder River County residents, including five commissioners and a state representative, attended last Thursday’s informal hearing to protest the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks’ proposed purchase of the 36,000 acres (20,000 acres deeded, approximately, 16,000 leased) Brewer Ranch. When Department official Don Childress of Helena asked for proponents of the planned purchase, he was greeted by dead silence. But, when asked for...
By Kelda Page The Christmas Holiday Season is approaching and some of us must face the season with only memories of past holidays shared with loved ones we have lost. Others may be celebrating the holidays without family members who are serving in the military. Or has someone or an organization impacted your life in a positive way? Why not take the opportunity to remember all the loved ones that you miss, an organization or person(s) that has impacted your life, or the dedicated men and women in the military by giving a monetary donation in...
