The month of April began as a rather bleak looking affair, with the continued drought which had persisted through 2020 and 2021 carrying on into the spring of 2022. Broadus Tracksters competed in two meets last week – the Hardin Invitational on April 26th and the Harlo/Park City Meet in Laurel on April 30th. Despite the team's inability to practice on the home track over the past several weeks due to poor surface conditions brought on by the April storms, Broadus performed very well in Hardin, with individuals placing in many events and the relay teams also placing quite well. The longstanding Community Appreciation Day tradition took place Monday. The annual event in which Broadus JH and HS students work to clean and fix up projects around the community. The event was originally planned for last week but was delayed due to weather. The Broadus High School Band will travel to Dayton, Wyoming this weekend to play alongside the Tongue River High and Middle School bands in “American Musical Journey”, a program incorporating a full complement of brass and percussion to provide a “musical travelogue through American history”, according to the Dallas Brass website. Margaret Mae Tipton, 91, died at St. John's Powers Cottage, Billings, on April 19, 2022. Margaret was born on April 13, 1931, in Hemingford, Nebraska, and grew up on the family ranch near Broadus. Margaret married Willis Tipton on Sept. 2, 1947. They made their first home in Broadus, then moved to Sidney, Nebraska, in 1950, then back to the family ranch in 1958. Helena, Mont. – On Wednesday, April 27, the Montana Department of Livestock (MDOL) received confirmation of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) in a Pondera County flock. Montana now has eight flocks confirmed infected as part of a wave of HPAI infections in the United States linked to the seasonal migrations of wild birds. The Broadus Golf team missed five tournaments due to cancellations in April, finally making a meet in Forsyth on Friday, April 22nd. Head Golf Coach Chad Gatlin told us that the weather was beautiful in Forsyth, and Broadus golfers were able to perform quite well, competing with a number of Class B and C schools. Broadus boys and girls teams won the Class C team scores, but had a tougher time competing against the B schools, especially Columbus, which is the defending Montana Class B Champs in both boys and girls.
