    Chad Gatlin was sworn in as the new mayor of Broadus by Town Judge Becky McEuen last Tuesday evening, after being acclaimed by resolution in 2021. Gatlin follows Lyman Amsden as mayor, who served four previous non-consecutive terms, after he was first appointed to the position in 1992. Gatlin follows in the footsteps of his Grandpa Don Gatlin, who was acting mayor of Broadus for a period in 1974, having previously served on the town council in the 1950s and '60s.   • Hawk Wrestlers Place In North Dakota

    Six Broadus wrestlers made the trip to Hettinger, North Dakota last Friday for the Hettinger Classic, which featured teams from Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota, and South Dakota. The tournament featured a round robin match on Friday, with wrestlers needing two wins to ensure placement into the tournament on Saturday. Three of the six wrestlers – Kail Irish, Seth McDowell, and Dakota Holbrook made the Saturday tournament, while Raiden Aurand, Archer Edwards, and Riggin Schaffer lost out prior to Saturday. Then enter a team in the Steps for Charity challenge organized by Powder River Trails and the Powder River County MSU Extension Office. The 8-week challenge runs from February 1st through March 31st.     Broadus basketball teams hosted two nights of home games last week, taking on the always tough Melstone Broncs and Lady Broncs on Thursday, followed by the Ekalaka Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs on Friday. This week the teams travel to Wibaux on Friday, and host Custer/Hysham on Saturday, with a JV Boys game beginning at 1:30 (only a half game will be played), JV Girls scheduled for 2:30, Varsity Boys at 4, and Varsity Girls at 5:30.     VFW Cornhole League will take place Friday nights, January 28 - March 25th. Play starts at 6:30 p.m at the VFW Post 1595 in Broadus.     HELENA - The 2021 Legislature passed House Bill 303, changing how Montana taxes business equipment. The new law increases the business equipment tax exemption from $100,000 to $300,000 for Tax Year 2022. Businesses whose statewide market value of equipment is $300,000 or less are exempt from the business equipment tax.
