    Broadus, MT - Last month, the Little Peeps program of Mountain Health Gives, based in Helena, provided 91 kids with a free eye exam at Broadus School. Sixteen of those kids were in need of a pair of glasses and will receive the glasses free of charge (several kids received two pairs). Competitions at this event were Livestock Judging, Horse Judging, and Range. Most of our new freshman members competed in their first competitions at this event, and many of them performed very well.   • Broadus Topped Record Daily Highs Five Times In September

    Broadus experienced five separate daily record highs September. The records fell during the last week of September, with new record temps of 96, 98, 95, 98, and 97 recorded on September 25th, 26th, 27th, 29th, and 30th. Those record highs, when combined with above average temperatures throughout the month, set the average daily high for the month at 88.7 degrees, or nearly 10 degrees above the average of 79.0.     Monday, September 9, 2024 Commissioner Chair Lee Randall called the meeting to order at 1:00 p.m. in the Commissioner’s office, Powder River County Courthouse.     Broadus took care of business in short order during the Homecoming volleyball match against Ekalaka, last Thursday. Broadus won handily in three sets, 25-10, 25-12, and 25-6, as Maddie Zimmer led the team with 12 kills for the Lady Hawks.     Despite steady high winds in the 30 mph range during the race, 4 out of 5 Broadus XC runners had personal records for the season. Coach Ashley Emmons told us that she emphasized "drafting" to the team to take advantage of the wind.     To the people of Broadus, I went to Broadus in August on my way out west for a family reunion. I was looking for a motel in Broadus, and a man working in his yard gave me directions. Then while I was still looking, a lady had me follow her to the motel. When I arrived, the fellow from the yard drove up to make sure I had made it where I needed to go.     Daniel Nathan Ries, age 60 of Black Hawk, SD passed away peacefully at his home on September 30, 2024. Dan was born September 7, 1964 at Glasgow Air Force Base, MT to David Ries and Betty (Jones) Ries. Dan grew up with four brothers and two sisters in Sergeant Bluff, Iowa.     Broadus and Forsyth faced off on Friday evening under the lights for the Broadus Homecoming game, with a rowdy crowd from each town present to cheer on their teams. Winters Arrested For Wife Desertion William Winters, a long-time resident of Otter Creek, where he had owned a ranch and engaged in the stock business until foreclosed by Ed Yager, was arrested Sunday by Sheriff Warren on complaint of Mrs. Winters, upon charge of wife desertion.
