By Mary Rumph, Powder River Extension A hot topic of conversation these days is how many mice one has trapped in the last 24 hours. The mice in my house are pretty smart; they avoid traps by staying in the walls…in which they perish and stink. I’ve heard from others that mice are destroying wiring in vehicles (even ones driven frequently), boldly appearing during daylight hours and any uninhabited building is an open invitation for a mouse infestation. I had a mouse pack the vents in my tractor cab by shredding a paper towel overnight! I’v...

The Lady Hawk Varsity Volleyball team racked up another conference win over the weekend against Busby, while also winning the consolation bracket of the Belle Fourche Tournament on Saturday. In the match against Busby, Coach Monica Smith had her team work on playing the ball more efficiently than they had in previous matches, which meant that their offense consisted of offspeed hits and tips into open parts of the defensive floor – a stark contrast to the hard hitting spikes that have been t...
Broadus fell to Ekalaka on the football field last Saturday. The Hawks put up 28 points in the loss, while Ekalaka put down 56 points to go to 3-0 in conference play. "Our problem was consistency," Broadus Head Coach Brett Emmons told us earlier this week. "We had some good drives where we walked down the field and scored, but then we had some drives where penalties and other mistakes hurt us," he said. The Hawks were led in scoring by QB Jayce Schroeder's three rushing touchdowns; Jayce also...

In the previous installment of Horseback Librarian, Lanette found herself in an unfortunate situation. She concluded as she wrote to her cousin, Maisie Dodd, that she was lost in the Appalachian Mountains. This happened after a recent snowstorm, which threw Lanette off schedule and obscured the landmarks she had depended on to guide her way through the mountains. Will Lanette find her way back to Miracle? Chapter Seven November 5, 1934 Dear Maisie, The night spent under the tree was definitely cold. There was no doubt I shivered quite a deal. T...

September 28, 1923 Ship Poultry by Parcel Post A poultry raiser residing near Broadus has found that dressed chickens, ducks and turkeys may be marketed with good profit by using the mail, sending them via parcel post to Chicago. Last year 15 fat White Rocks under six months netted him $1.75 each and large Rhode Island Reds gave him $1.40 each. Not even half as much money could have been realized by marketing the chickens in Miles City or other nearby points. The fowls were shipped to C.H. Weaver, 65-67 Water Street, Chicago, a poultry...

By PR Extension Office Though the abundance of the moths has tapered in the last week, the sod webworm moths made the simplest jobs difficult, according to MSU Extension Powder River County Agent Mary Rumph. “Reports of having difficulty seeing and even breathing while on an ATV were common in the last few weeks due to the number of moths flying,” said Rumph. “My horse was even bothered by the pest flying around his face.” Though a common fall pest, the sheer volume of moths was unsettling, she added. The larva feeds on grass and damage wa...
