The county budget was finalized last week; the accompanying chart breaks down the budgets of each department. The county commissioners told us that key takeaways from the 2020-21 budget are that local taxes will remain essentially the same as last year, and we won’t see any substantial budget reductions. A slight drop in mill value levels make the numbers a tad different overall, but essentially we’re looking at a similar amount of money taken from the taxpayer’s coffers. One major addition this year which isn’t reflected in the accompa...

During the second game, we may have got a little overconfident after our first win, and we got behind early but to ou...
By Cynde Jo Gatlin, PR County Election Administrator As you all know, I have decided to move forward with a poll election in November. At this time, I have enough judges to run a poll election. However, with the unknown future of COVID-19 in our county, I would like to have backup judges in the instance that one of my current judges gets sick and can’t make it or is quarantined. If anyone is interested in being an election judge or ballot counter, please contact me as soon as possible. There will be a mandatory training for judges in Oct...
By Broadus Schools Superintendent Jim Hansen Preparing for the opening of school this year has certainly been difficult. Providing education already has its unique issues, but COVID-19 has given all of us new challenges. Powder River County has been fortunate to stay below four cases and avoid the State mask mandate. However, if our county reaches four cases, the school and all activities will fall under the Governor’s mandate and we will be required to wear face coverings. If you or your child have a medical condition that prohibits wearing a...
The school board met Monday evening to discuss the September agenda items. 16 members of the public were on hand for the meeting. The board approved four individual transportation contracts and one room and board contract, which were all folks along the Hammond bus route. This bus route has not had a bus contract this school year, meaning parents have been driving their kids into town, or in at least one case, rented housing in town. These contracts are all dependent on the county transportation committee’s approval, which ties in to the bus co...

The plant is a warm season, grassy annual weed, reproducing by seed. The plant grows 8 inches to 3 feet tall, occasionally erect, but usually spreading horizontally and forming...

Sitting around 15 miles from the Canadian border, Scobey boasts a tough Class C football team, and they demonstrated their strength against the Hawks. Broadus went 3 and out on their first possession, with Scobey blocking a punt, then after another failed drive for Broadus, Scobey ran a trick play to put them up 12-0 in short order.
