The Broadus Hawk Football Team had their first test of the year last weekend, as they traveled to Forsyth. The team was originally scheduled to open the season at home against Lame Deer on August 30th, but Lame Deer did not have enough eligible players at the time to make a team. Broadus Coach Ross Randall knew going into the game against Forsyth that the Doggies had a bigger team that could better control the line of scrimmage. The Hawks are a young team; Randall said that the Forsyth game was the first full Varsity game for 9 of the 12...
The Broadus Lady Hawk Volleyball team played in two matches over the weekend, traveling to Jordan on Friday and hosting the first home match of the year, on Saturday. With the air-conditioning on the bus in a state of disrepair, windows that wouldn't open, and temps outside hovering near 90, the Lady Hawks' trip to Jordan was a tad toasty. Broadus opened up the first game of the evening playing in close contention to Jordan. "Overall I think we played better against Jordan in the first game,...

Thursday, September 14, 1989 Seven local swimmers qualified for Nationals Broadus youngsters did extremely well in competition at the Colstrip National Qualifying Swim Meet held late last summer. Competitors at Colstrip had to place in the top two in an event to qualify. Because the nationals were in San Antonio, Texas, however, none of the local qualifiers were able to attend. Eight-year-old Seth...

As you are hitting the field this fall, be sure to take a break from scanning the horizon for game and look down at the ground once in a while. Not only will this hopefully help you avoid stepping on a cactus or a rattlesnake, you might also see one of eastern Montana’s rarely seen critters…the greater short-horned lizard; and FWP would like to know about it. The greater short- horned lizard, Phrynosoma hernandesi, or “horny toad” is a Species of Greatest Inventory Need (SGIN) in Montana due to insufficient data to determine their status....

To Powder River County, We hear people say all the time how they couldn’t live in a small town because there's nothing to do, or how it doesn't offer them anything. This may be true, we don't have Walmart or Mcdonald’s. But we don't need those things. I am a firm believer that more people would be a lot happier with their life if they would look at what they have instead of what they want. To be a part of such an amazing, upstanding, and most of all caring community is one of the most astonishing things that has happened to our family. The mag...
Courtesy PR Extension Service A few of the late summer and early fall weeds are very prickly, according to Powder River Extension Agent Mary Rumph. “Field sandbur seeds stick to everything…shoe laces, socks, wool, and fur,” commented Rumph, “and it hurts your fingers when you detach them unless wearing gloves,” she added. The plant is a warm season, grassy annual weed, reproducing by seed. The plant grows 8 inches to 3 feet tall, occasionally erect, but usually spreading horizontally and forming dense mats. A native of Europe, longspine s...
