Starting in Sheridan County, Wyoming, the fire continued into Montana by torching portions of three counties including Powder River, Big Horn and Rosebud. Covering over 196,000 acres, the fire affected hundreds of miles of fence that simply aren't there anymore. Many of the ranchers affected lost 80-100% of their grazing...
As of Monday, the 196,368 acre Remington fire was 81% contained. The rebuilding process for locals affected by the fire will be long and arduous, but many folks and organizations have stepped forward to provide a source for donations. The Lady Hawk volleyball team took to the court in the first trial of the season in Glendive on Saturday, for a tournament against a number of Eastern Montana teams. Monica Smith returns as head coach of the team, along with assistant coaches Raevyn Slovek and Missy Billing. The team comes off a historic season in which Broadus took second at state in 2023, and now look towards the future after multiple seniors departed the team last season. The Broadus Hawk football team started off the season last Friday with 8 players eligible to take the field, meaning every player had to play both sides of the ball as well as all special team plays. Meanwhile Scobey had 23 players on the roster, and quickly ran the score up 22-0 over the Hawks in the first quarter. Over the past week the Broadus VFD has responded to several area fires. On August 27th, a 42 acre fire started along Highway 212, around 8 miles east of Ashland. The cause was from a suspected cigarette or similar device from the road. That same day, a lightning caused fire from a storm the previous night occurred in the cottonwood trees along the Little Powder, around 8 miles SE of Broadus. That fire burned 6.6 acres. Charles "Jay" Neiman, of Broadus passed away August 26, 2024 in Broadus at the age of 77. Jay was born February 24,1947 to Iris and Jim Neiman of the Little Powder River area.
