If one were to think the Southeast Montana weather of late has felt a bit warmer and drier than usual, they would be entirely correct in their hypothesis. Temperatures in July topped 90 degrees for a whopping 25 days in a row, with the heat wave continuing into early August, where the first four days of the month also had temperatures over 90. During that 25 day heat wave, the weather station at the courthouse recorded 10 days with temperatures above 100. Broadus recorded two new daily high temperatures records over that period as the mercury...
By Libby Nisley, Pool Manager Our pool has been decently busy this summer. Although some days were shut down early with storms and cool weather the pool averaged daily attendance of 31 swimmers since our opening day May 28th. The busiest day was Friday during the fair with 69 swimmers. In addition, there were 71 kids in swimming lessons, with a handful of those being repeats to do two levels in one summer. This year’s staff was older, which was great to have experience. However, with three of those staff members heading off to college sports t...
By Jackie Beardsley Ten pies were entered into the 2024 Powder River County Fair Pie Making Contest. Categories included Cream, Custard, Fruit and Savory. It was requested pies be homemade from scratch and in a 9-inch disposable pie tin. Although Cream and Custard pies often have similar ingredients, the way they are prepared differs. Cream pies are prepared on a stove top and poured into a pre-baked cooled crust. Custard pie ingredients are combined and added to a crust to be baked in an oven....

Shane Copps pled guilty to three felony theft charges on July 31st. The initial charges stem from 2021, when Copps worked with the Powder River First Responders; during that time he was also the county’s Ambulance Director. Charging documents indicate that in August and September of 2021, Copps submitted requests and received reimbursement for installation of equipment on a 2020 Ford Explorer owned by PR First Responders. The order was then cancelled and the installation did not occur, but Copps did not return the money (two separate charges f...

By Annie Brimmer Powder River County Fair 2024 has gone down in the annals of history. I’m sure there were smiles and disappointments. If it was smiles, remember what you did to achieve your success. If it was disappointment, take a good look at the overall picture, figure out what you might do different, and remember you learn by doing and you’re a winner because you tried. I’m so appreciative to all who helped us at our hamburger booth; before, during and after. We couldn’t do it without all the many hands. We appreciate the many complim...

August 8, 1924 Three Youthful Campers Run Short of Supplies There was all bustle and excitement in three Broadus homes Friday evening of last week when the three youthful representatives were making elaborate arrangements for a camping trip to the hills beyond Broadus which they calculated to last two weeks. The boys met early Saturday morning at their trysting place, each carrying large paper sackfuls of “grub”. In addition to this weight, each carried a steel trap, for they were going to occupy their time and attention in trapping coy...
HELENA – The wolf population in Montana remains healthy, according to the 2023 Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Wolf Report. Increased harvest during the 2023 wolf season has not yet resulted in an estimated decline to the statewide total. However, FWP biologists expect to see a moderate decline in wolf numbers next year resulting from the increased harvest in early 2024. “We are committed to following the law to reduce wolf numbers to a sustainable level, which means ensuring Montana has a healthy state managed population,” said Quentin Kujal...
