    A large crowd was on hand for the 4th of July activities last week in Broadus. Perhaps the wet, cool weather allowed more ranchers to attend the event; regardless of reasoning, moods were high as folks commented on the nice weather and rains of late. The weather for the 4th was cool, with temps in the upper 50s to around 60 throughout the day. The Freedom Run featured a group of runners and walkers.   • Ropers, Golfers Compete In Rope N Stroke

    In the 7th year of competition at the Franklin Memorial Rope N Stroke in Broadus, the top winning team consisted of Chad Gatlin, Dan Bird, and Jake Foulger, amongst a field of 11 teams. Competitors are teamed up with a header, heeler, and golfer on each team. Each team ropes three calves – the team ropers on live calves, and the golfer ropes a dummy. Overall, 29 people and two dogs ran or walked either the 1-mile, 3-mile or 5-mile races.     July 13, 1923 John Broaddus Tells Story with a Tail to It A cow, owned by John Broaddus, became hopelessly bogged in Powder River a few days ago, and had to be killed to end its suffering. Mr. Broaddus sought to salvage the carcass by feeding it to his hogs. There was an overabundance of meat even for the hogs and they could not devour all of it.     Dusty Gilger, age 74 of Boyes, Montana, died Wednesday, July 12, 2023 following sudden complications with his fight with cancer.
