Copious quantities of moisture fell on Southeastern Montana Friday night, with Broadus receiving 1.50" in the deluge. High winds accompanied the storm, causing limited devastation around the Broadus area, and localized flooding of some county roads. The storm uprooted trees at the golf course, as well as taking the roof off a nearby shed. Three enterprising young Broadus business people sold snow cones outside Broadus Insurance on Monday, selling over 50 snow cones to passers-by within 3 hours, according to stand manager Griffin Gardner. Early Monday morning, a rollover accident on Hwy 212 claimed the life of Josiah Middle Rider, age 19, of Broadus, and sent an Ekalaka man to the hospital in Rapid City. Montana Highway Patrol reports the accident occurred near mile marker 92, approximately 12 mile east of Broadus, with authorities dispatched to the scene at 4:42 AM. Middle Rider, the driver, reportedly drifted off the right side of the road in a Ford F250 pickup, crossed back onto the road, and right again, rolling the vehicle. Chris Shannon Elwood was born March 23, 1955, in Wichita, Kansas to Kenneth and Marie (Hansen) Elwood. They moved to Miles City, MT in 1960 and that's when he met his lifelong friend Bill (Shorty) Timberman. Chris went to grade school and high school in Miles City. June 25, 1948 Irion’s “Drifter” Wins Endurance Contest “Drifter”, owned by Tim Irion of Olive and ridden by Billy Stewart of Mizpah, won the 127 mile Hell Creek-Miles City endurance ride Saturday, June 19 in 12 hours, 10 minutes, and 36 seconds coming into the Miles City rodeo grounds 26 minutes ahead of B. Pfeifer of Jordan and F. Liverty of Miles City. The winner’s share of the prize amounted to $2880. The second place Pfeifer, riding for T. Local health officials encourage rabies vaccination of pets (cost approximately $20) On June 13, 2023, DPHHS received the first report of a rabid animal this year. A striped skunk in Powder River County tested positive for rabies. Last week a second rabid skunk was identified in the county. In 2022, 13 animals submitted for rabies testing to the Montana Department of Livestock (DOL) were positive for rabies (nine bats, three skunks, and one dog). Humans and animals exposed to bats and skunks are considered at high-risk for rabies infection....
