  • Bear Sighted Near Broadus

    Jun 25, 2020

On Saturday afternoon, an ursine visitor traveled near Broadus. Where the visitor traveled from, and where he is traveling to, is still a mystery. The Powder River Sheriff’s Office was alerted by a passing motorist of a black bear, which was seen along the river from the Powder River Bridge. Sheriff’s Deputy John Gatlin drove out to investigate, and confronted the hairy traveler at around fifty yards distance, on the Broadus side of the bridge, and headed towards town. Gatlin jumped out of his patrol car with the intent of sending the bear els...

  • A Gazillion Grasshoppers

    Jun 25, 2020

Courtesy PR Extension Office The prediction for a heavy grasshopper infestation this summer has certainly proven correct – memories of 1988 are being shared by those who dealt with a severe infestation at that time, according to Powder River Extension Agent Mary Rumph. “Unfortunately, all the environmental factors that could have helped reduce the population didn’t happen,” said Rumph. “For example, cold, wet weather is very destructive to newly hatched grasshoppers. Alternatively, very dry winter and spring conditions also can be harmful to...

    Jun 25, 2020

Thursday, June 28, 1990 Wandering black bear may have headed home Being a celebrity may have been too much for a wandering black bear, who apparently has fled the area in search of a less hectic atmosphere. The bruin, which showed up unexpectedly north of Broadus last Wednesday evening, seemed only occasionally bothered by the strange goings on of man. A few occasions were apparently enough, however, and the bear may have headed home, but not before causing quite a stir among people who have never seen one in the area before. According to Game...

They like doing the small engine project because, "we like working with Dad in the garage. The challenging part is putting the engines back together after taking them apart to find and fix what is wrong with them." Living in the country, they discovered social distancing was easy, "we just stayed home. It was weird to not go to church. We studied, cooked,...
