Courtesy PR Extension Office A chronic problem for many producers is the alfalfa weevil, a key insect pest of alfalfa, causing variable levels of economic damage across Montana each growing season according to Powder River Extension Agent Mary Rumph. “I started monitoring fields last week” reported Rumph, “and ended up collecting a few larvae. This week, the number increased to 25 larvae per ten sweeps, said Rumph. There was no evident damage to the forage.” “So, weevil is present, and growing in numbers in the fields I swept,” said Rumph. “I e...

Courtesy MT DPHHS Raising backyard poultry has become an increasingly popular activity in Montana. Spring is a common season to purchase and begin raising young birds, and there are many feed stores in Montana that sell chicks and ducks. While there are benefits to raising poultry, there are also associated health risks. Poultry can carry and shed bacteria such as Salmonella without showing any signs of disease. Salmonella can cause illness in humans and can be spread while handling live poultry or objects in their environment. Montana has a...

Billy, The foxes bring back a good memory - we raised one, one summer. It finally ran away (maybe to the river). Our little dog was seen playing with it in the field by the Tastee Freez. I sure enjoyed Joe’s Mexico trips. I look forward to reading them each year. I sure have been missing a lot of my friends too. Mamie Denson...

By Joe Stuver (Continued from last week) After wandering over half of central Mexico last year, and getting caught in the nightmare nighttime traffic of Guadalajara, I actually had the route down well for this year's adventure. The two-lane coastal highway traffic is really slow, with lots of putt-putt 20-mile-per-hour mopeds, or even slower-traveling bicycles, along with ancient farm vehicles. Plus, in Mexico, there are topes (speed bumps) everywhere. They are of different heights; some you...
Thursday, June 7, 1990 $1500 raised for new Biddle Hall at Hubub Day A strong wind Saturday kept the crowd size at a minimum at the Help Us Build Up Biddle Fun Day, but did little to dampen the spirits of those on hand. The community has now reached about the halfway point of raising the needed $40,000 to build the new hall. Around $20,000 has already been...

MONTANA – More than half of Montana households have now self-responded to the 2020 Census, yet the state still lags behind the national average for responding to the once-in-a-decade count. Self-responding to the Census means the household has filled out the form without a federal Census taker visiting the home. The national self-response rate is currently 60.1 percent while Montana’s self-response rate is 51.1 percent. “Filling out your Census form is one of the most important things you can do for your community,” State Complete Count Committ...
Kayleigh Opstedahl is taking a market lamb to the fair. She said, "He was born in February. I have halter broken him over the last couple of months and have been feeding him grain. Another activity I have been doing is working on an end table that I plan to enter in the silent auction. It is made of old barn wood. My Papa John has been guiding me. 4-H member Delaney Ruland and her favorite silkie chicken Diamond are good buddies. Diamond is a good sport about being packed around in a jacket, sitting on the trampoline and doesn't even mind getting a bath. Delaney says that the other chickens don't like getting baths as much as Diamond does. Delaney also has been bottle feeding lambs, and looking forward to all the bugs coming out so she can start collecting them. Social distancing has meant that she has more time to go outside and also...
