  • Students and other residents work together to Clean Up Community

    May 9, 2019

By Dori Phillips It was chilly weather for cleaning our community, however, the snow and rain let up long enough to allow the day to happen. Melissa Billing organized this year’s projects with Dori Phillips helping from the school to arrange students for each project. Over 80 students and more than 40 adults worked through less-than-perfect weather to accomplish big things! Mrs. Ternes and Dori Phillips circulated through the projects to get pictures and make sure everything was going well for all of the groups. Libby Nisley had a group of s...

  • Showers, in the form of rain and snow, punctuate the month of April

    May 9, 2019

Though Powder River County received multiple snowstorms in April, the temps and precipitation totals were around normal for the month. In Broadus, the average monthly high of 60.7 degrees matched the “normal” high temp, with highs topping out at 81 degrees on the 19th and 21st. The average low of 35.1 was actually above the average monthly low of 31.7 – though the month as a whole seemed to be fairly chilly, perhaps due to fairly regular cloud cover and wind causing the temps to seem chillier than the air temperature would indicate. The lowes...

  • Black Grass Bugs Are Back!

    May 9, 2019

Courtesy PR Extension Just in the last week, the black grass bug hammered crested wheatgrass hard, according to Mary Rumph, Powder River Extension Agent. People will first notice an “anemic” look to the grass in some areas, where it should be a healthy green color. The black grass bug literally “sucks the juices” out of the leaves, leaving a whitened, tough and stringy leaf. The black grass bug (labops hesperius) is one of the earliest pests to emerge in the spring and is able to feed in very cold weather. The young nymphs hatch from eggs that...

  • Alyssum is Everywhere!

    May 9, 2019

Courtesy PR Extension Early annual weeds are impacting the range, according to Extension Agent Mary Rumph. Yellow alyssum (Alyssum alyssoides) and desert alyssum (Alyssum desertorum) are non-native, annual, weedy forbs (i.e., herbs) that are becoming more prevalent and problematic, especially in western, central, and southeastern Montana. Though plentiful, the alyssum is fine stemmed, flowers and then dies, and is often not noticed later in the growing season, said Rumph. • Insights & Observations

    May 9, 2019

By Joe Stuver Sights worth seeing: MORE MOISTURE! It’s going to be a wonderful spring, if it gets here before summer. We send out a huge community salute to Bucky Billing and Lyle Rogge, who retired last week after serving TRECO, and their community, very well indeed over their long tenure. They helped keep the power flowing to their customers in all kinds of foul weather, in all kinds of circumstances, and were among the first on scene to cut that same power during fires. Linemen continue to hold one of the most dangerous jobs in the c...
