  • School Board Meets

    May 7, 2020

In-Person School Won’t Resume This Spring, Graduation Now Planned For June 27th The Broadus School Board met Monday night for the May meeting. On the agenda was whether to continue school after the lifting of the governor’s stay at home directives, as well as whether to hold graduation. The Board made the decision to continue with the current form of teaching – that is, students will continue to learn from home for the rest of the school year. Additionally, graduation will not be held on its original date in May. The plan is to try and hold a h...

  • Record Lows Punctuate a Dry April

    May 7, 2020

If the growth of fields and lawns seems a bit behind this year, there's good reason for the delay - Broadus hit three record lows during the month of April. On April 3rd, the mercury fell to -1, on the 13th the low was 10, and on the 14th the low was 12 degrees. The unseasonably low temps set back plant growth, though seasonably average temps later in the month promoted growth. The -1 recording on April 3rd was only the second time on record that a below zero reading was recorded in April, in Br...

  • Broadus Senior Class Handles the Shutdown in Style

    May 7, 2020

The Senior Class of 2020 has had a senior experience unlike any other, with the coronavirus shut down affecting nearly every facet of the final months of their high school careers. The class has missed out on their senior prom, their senior trip, spring sports, a "normal" graduation, after grad party, and numerous other events. On top of that, they miss the final few months of school – that special golden hour, not unlike the time between sunset and darkness, when seniors are "masters of t...

  • Superintendent's Report

    May 7, 2020

By Broadus Schools Superintendent Jim Hansen 5-4-2020 On behalf of the school district, I would like to thank the parents and community for being so supportive of the school during this difficult time. This will certainly be a year we will all remember. Without students in the building, it forced me to reflect on what our students are missing, and maybe more importantly, what our expectations are. In my own situation I asked myself what I wanted my kids to experience before they graduated from Powder River County District High School....

  • Watch for Black Grass Bugs

    May 7, 2020

Courtesy PR Extension Office With the recent warm temperatures, the crested wheat grass has shot up in growth. Unfortunately, this is also the time of year that we normally see the black grass bug explode, according to Mary Rumph, Powder River Extension Agent. People will first notice an “anemic” look to the grass in some areas, where it should be a healthy green color. The black grass bug literally “sucks the juices” out of the leaves, leaving a whitened, tough and stringy leaf. The black grass bug (labops hesperius) is one of the earliest pes...

  • Get Out and Grow a Garden

    May 7, 2020

Courtesy PR Extension Office It’s spring and gardening is in the air. Whether you want to ensure a fresh food supply or simply get outside and test your green thumb, there are many resources available to help you grow a vegetable garden. Having a successful vegetable garden depends upon planting enough of the right vegetables at the right time to supply a family’s needs. It starts, like most things, with a good plan explained Julie Riley, Extension Agent. A great place to develop that plan and learn about gardening is from the MSU Exten...

Come have a looksee and also say hello to our Summer Store Manager, Hannelore Olson. We...

  • Election Connection

    May 7, 2020

B.I.P.A Ballot Interference Prevention Act In the November 2018 General election, LR129 passed with 69% approval, which implemented the ballot interference prevention act, or BIPA. Under BIPA, election administrators are required to have all ballot collectors register their contact information and each voter’s address for every ballot they deliver on behalf of another voter. The law states 1 collector per 6 ballots. This law does not apply to ballots dropped in the mail. Basically, if someone wants to deliver a ballot other than their own, I a...

By Darlynn Williams, PR County Public Health Nurse Governor Bullock has announced a 3 phase plan to get Montana back to work while protecting the health of all Montanans and the healthcare system. This phased approach is based on up-to-date data and statewide preparedness. It mitigates the ris...

  • Native Forbs are Blooming, Including Death Camas

    May 7, 2020

Courtesy PR Extension Office The native forbs are blooming, enhancing the prairie with splashes of color. Unfortunately, not all that is growing is desirable, according to Mary Rumph, Powder River Extension Agent. “In addition to the grass and desirable forbs, I noticed poisonous death camas is present and blooming,” said Rumph. The two most prevalent species are meadow death camas and mountain death camas. While both species can be found in Montana, meadow death camas is the most common and can be found in foothills and on range. Meadow death...

  • Insights & Observations

    May 7, 2020

By Joe Stuver Continued from last week. I had many fine adventures with Vicky and Natalie in past years, and continued on with several very fun road trips this year. My respect for Angel, who is 6’1” and weighs probably 210, soared on the news that Mony had awakened to burglars breaking into the place across the street. While she called the police, Angel grabbed up a machete and ran across the way to confront the burglars. He had them chased off by the time the police arrived. At the beginning and end of my many trips to Jarredaradas, I am als...

  • Letters To The Editor

    May 7, 2020

I recently was in Milton, Iowa where I looked for the grave of Mary Mills, which I believe to be kinfolk prior to 1920 and I was able to locate her grave, born in 1880 and died in 1932. I had a very interesting journey and searched through the graveyard, one might have thought he was in the graveyard at Broadus, Ekalaka, Boyes or Alzada, certainly the Tri State Area. My curiosity is if any folks who have roots to the Milton area came West in the last century, it amazes me that so many in the Milton graveyard have surnames which fit this area....

This is Ava's second year in the Woodworking project. 4-H member Alivia Landa (pictured at left) has been practicing her Horsemanship pattern with her horse named "Frog". She has also enjoyed pleasure riding this spring; an extra bonus was finding a shed elk horn. 4-H Family Feature comes to us courtesy of the PR Extension Office....
