    On Tuesday, April 11th the Powder River County Sheriff’s Department assisted the Montana Department of Corrections Probation and Parole with a search of the Kyle Giacometto property at 201 South Park in Broadus. Probation violations were found; details were still pending in District Court records as of press time. On Saturday night around midnight, the department made an arrest of Daniel Hartman, age 51 of Broadus, at the Montana Bar in Broadus.   • School Conducting Calendar Survey

    Broadus Public Schools is conducting a survey to gauge interest in the proposed 2023-24 school calendar. The survey deals with the modified 4-day schedule adopted at the March meeting, and is available for all members of the community to fill out and submit. The survey, available at the school’s website, www.broadus.net, features six questions, and room to comment on the modified 4-day schedule.   • Ballers Play For A Good Cause

    Basketball players from the local area, along with teams from Baker, Ekalaka, Fair-view/NE MT, and other parts of MT and South Dakota played in the 5th Annual Amanda Gaskill Memorial Tournament, held over the weekend at the high school gym. The tournament is held in memory of Amanda Gaskill, a fine young lady who passed away in a tragic accident in 2017.     Broadus Tracksters competed in two meets last week with wildly different weather, representative of a typical Montana spring – on Tuesday the team attended a meet in Lockwood featuring 80 degree temps, while on Saturday a meet in Baker featured temps near freezing, with competitors bundled up in layers, even competing in heavy clothing.   • Nursing Home Has Interim Administrator

    Nadine Elmore with the Montana Health Network (a staffing agency) has taken over the helm at Powder River Manor as Interim Administrator, after the non-renewal of Sean Hill as Administrator. Powder River County Commissioners commented during a recent meeting that they have recently had and will continue to have a larger presence at the Manor. A facility census on March 2 noted 18 residents at the Manor. Plans to hire a full-time administrator are in the works, per the commissioners.     By Broadus Schools Music Director Lisa Lynch High School Music Festival was held Friday and Saturday, April 14th and 15th at Custer County High School in Miles City. On Friday, the students performed their band and choir pieces for two adjudicators. Both groups did well. The band received a superior rating and the choir received an excellent.     Helena, Mont. – On Friday April 14, 2023, the Montana Department of Livestock (MDOL) confirmed Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) in a Rosebud County backyard poultry flock. This is the 17th HPAI affected flock in the state of Montana linked to the 2022 outbreak of HPAI infections in the United States. The disease was last confirmed in poultry in the state in January. Emma Isaacs and Lauryn Billing tied for second place by each shooting a 90, as Abby Baer of Colstrip won top honors with an 84. For the boys, Cade Sorlie of Huntley won the event with a 77.     By PR Extension Office One of the earliest weeds to appear in the spring, as early as the mustards, is a small yellow flowering annual known as bur buttercup, according to Powder River Extension Agent Mary Rumph.
