    Powder River County turned 100 on St. Patrick's Day, marking a century of independence from Custer County. On March 17th of 1919, Powder River County was broken off from Custer County to become its own county, with the county commissioners originally meeting at Olive.     Courtesy of NOAA Spring is upon us, so now is the time to prepare for the impacts of flooding. Flooding can result from ice jams, snowmelt, high flows from mountain run-off or from heavy spring rains. The initial concern is for the possibility of local ice jam flooding in the coming weeks. Due to recent very cold temperatures, rivers and streams across the area have significant ice coverage.     The Annual Kindergarten Roundup will be held at Broadus Elementary on Wednesday, April 17th from 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM. The Roundup is meant to prepare the next year’s crop of Kindergarteners with the necessary information to begin their school careers. Children must be five years of age or older before September 10, 2019, to be eligible for Kindergarten. Appointments are required for the roundup, which may be made by calling 436-2637. When asked to share views on the performance of their elected officials, the responses of 293 registered Montana voters were mixed.     Four Broadus Junior High Students competed last week at the State Mathcounts competition at Montana Tech in Butte. The Broadus team consisted of 8th graders Marcus Mader, Rheanna Schroeder, Alex Edwards, and Lucinda Cain, along with their coaches - Broadus math teachers Eric Myers and Jeri Dell, made the journey to Butte.     Broadus 5th Grader Kayleigh Opstedahl competed in the Montana State Spelling Bee last Saturday at Rocky Mountain College in Billings. Kayleigh won the local competition in Broadus, which put her into the Treasure State Spelling Bee, competing against 59 other students from across Montana.
