By Dee Mobley We’ve been a couple months’ pokey (actually, tis me who’s been in procrastination mode) in saying thank you for a wildly productive 2021 to all those who make the St Vincent de Paul store a blessing to Powder River County and beyond. A constant stream of donations (some NEW, With Tags) keeps our racks and shelves full to sometimes overflowing. Customers, volunteers, Manager Charlee Kuhbacher – an entire team of folks work together well to keep the only Broadus Department Store blossoming. THANK YOU ALL. Despite published annual...

By Kerry Gardner Unfortunate news – we will not be able to hold a Health Fair in Broadus this spring. We recently received a phone call from Billings Clinic lab marketing department that Billings Clinic Lab is unable to do any health fairs in the coming months. The supply for tubes and other lab articles has been less than optimal. They have had to limit supplies to clinics that utilize their laboratory to make sure they have enough of the proper tubes at the hospitals. This has been difficult to plan ahead to make sure they have the n...
By Powder River County Health Nurse Darlynn Williams We’re not at the end of the pandemic yet, but the situation has changed, and we need to adapt to this new phase. In year three of the COVID-19 pandemic, we are all tired, frustrated, and upset because this virus has continued to disrupt our daily lives despite all the steps we’ve taken to stop it. During this time, we have all experienced losses due to COVID-19. Together we have lost parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, siblings, friends, and neighbors. Others have lost jobs, access to...

Participants first defined what community meant; then identified what the assets were in our community, said MSU Extension Powder River County Agent Mary Rumph. "The list generated i...
By Boys JV Coach Dustin Lanke The JV boys basketball team played their last game February 11th and defeated Melstone 29-19, finishing the season with a perfect 15-0 record, following a 13-2 record in 2020-21. Jaxon Bilbrey scored 8, Cooper Zimmer had 7, and Landen Capp chipped in with 2 to round out t...
By Girls JV Coach Monica Smith The JV girls basketball team had a solid season from start to finish. Although many of the games were shortened and a few were canceled, they finished with an overall record of 10-3, with the only losses being against Circle, Jordan, and Ekalaka. From their first game against Ekalaka at the tournament in Miles City to their last game at Melstone, there was so much improvement in each of the girls’ games. Not only did they become more physically and mentally tough, but they found a fire to really compete every tim...

To the Editor, The Canadians are giving us a lesson on how a national police force works, taking unheard of measures against her citizens we find hard to comprehend. Our system is unique in that the local sheriff is answerable only to the electorate. Most countries in the world have a national police, which allows control from the top. Our founders wisely left them independent to be but one more check and balance against overreach. They take an oath to uphold the constitution, which includes refusing to obey unconstitutional edicts of federal o...
By PR Extension Office Week 4 “I get my steps playing basketball with Dillon,” explained Colton Biesheuvel. “I get mine shed hunting,” added Paysen Kuhbacher. “I get my steps in basketball practice and ball games,” added Ciara McDowell. The three make up most of the Happy Feet Two team sponsored by Powder River Teen 4-H. Step for Charity team members are stepping everywhere! "We step in place while brushing our teeth, warming in front of the wood stove, and reading books. Instead of sitting or standing, we step. We also play outside every...
Courtesy MT Dept of Revenue HELENA — The Montana Department of Revenue has an important message to income tax filers: Keep your mailing address current with the department. This is especially true for anyone filing a Montana income tax return for the first time. That’s because the department sends refunds to first-time filers only as paper checks – not by direct deposit – due to our security measures to combat fraud. And, the Post Office will not forward your refund check to your new address. That means that if the department has an incorrect a...
Courtesy of the Miles City Star, By Amorette Allison The names of places always interests me so when I came across this article in the Saturday, Jan. 25, 1947 Miles City Daily Star, I found it fascinating. The rather wordy headline reads “How Powder River Got Its Name Made Matter of Research by Senator Toman in State Historical Library in Helena.” The Senator Toman in question was J. Fred Toman who represented - no surprise here - Powder River County. The name is apparently an old one, even before English was spoken in Montana. According to...
