Grasshopper Suppression Workshop will be held Tuesday, May 18th, 3:00 p.m. Broadus Community Center. By PR Extension Office As limited moisture has initiated the growth of grass, the possibility of another devastating summer of grasshoppers is becoming a greater concern. “I’m receiving reports of new grasshopper hatches,” said Powder River Extension Agent Mary Rumph. “The good news is that many of species that hatch early are not necessarily the destructive grasshoppers we experienced later in the summer last year,” said Rumph. Gary Adams,...
Though John Wilson may be the "new" minister at the Assembly of God church in Broadus, he is not new to the congregation, nor is he new to Southeastern Montana. John grew up on the family ranch near Ridge, along with brothers Jerry and Jim Wilson. After graduating high school in Belle Fourche, he matriculated to college in Missoula. John then returned to the area, teaching school for a year in Ridge and helping his dad calve and put up hay before finding his way into the ministry while he was...

Last Saturday evening, a fire erupted at the historic Club Buffet in Ashland. Sources tell us that a grease fire erupted in the kitchen early in the evening, and though Ashland VFD members were on scene quickly to douse the flames, the structure was fully consumed and appears to be a total loss. Those in the building were able to escape from the century plus old fixture of the community without major injury. The bar was most recently owned by Jay and Carla Johnson. (Photo courtesy Dave...

By Broadus Schools Superintendent Jim Hansen I have often referred to the spring graduation ceremony as our “Super Bowl.” It is the main event that transpires after thirteen years of education filled with adversity and celebration as our youth make the difficult transition to adulthood. Thirteen years is a long time considering many youth struggle to wait thirteen seconds. In a society so focused on “immediate gratification,” it is easy to lose sight of the ultimate goal. The educational and often over-looked social tribulations student...
By PR Extension Office “The little moisture received in the area has resulted in crested wheatgrass growing, which is good; but unfortunately, the black grass bug population has also exploded”, according to Mary Rumph, MSU Powder River Extension Agent. “Most crested wheatgrass is being consumed by livestock as quickly as it appears, so the black grass bugs are competing with cattle or sheep”, stated Rumph. “In fact, one of the control recommendations is intensive grazing, so the pest may not be as prevalent this spring compared to some years...
