The Broadus School Board met Monday evening for the February meeting. Broadus student Chalee Harms gave a presentation to the board about her trip to Las Vegas in December, where she attended the Jr. World Championship Finals Rodeo. Chalee missed a good chunk of school to attend the event, but made up the work and gave the presentation as an additional task. Chalee did a nice job presenting the trip, detailing her journey down, the days spent in Las Vegas at the rodeo, and the return home. Harms claimed 7th place in break-away roping at the...

By Mike Schuldt, MSU Extension, Custer County The importance of colostrum as the first meal for a newborn is well known in all species; however, the importance of timing has been a topic of research. Dr. Brian Vander Ley, University of Nebraska Veterinary Epidemiologist, recently shared information on timing. Colostrum serves as a loan of immunity from its mother until the calf has time to build its own. The small intestine absorbs the antibodies and is most efficient at this for the first four...
By Speech and Drama Coach Caroline Johnson WOW! What a magnificent season the Speech and Drama students have had this year! We had multiple wins throughout the season in both Speech and Drama Events. We traveled to Roundup for our B/C Divisional on Saturday, January 25th. Samantha Perry performed her humorous drama adaptation of Bob Newhart's skit, "First Night on the Job, King Kong". She did a fabulous job even though she was recovering from a hard bout of the flu just days before. She placed...

We have been fortunate so far this winter to have had mild temperatures and better than average road conditions. In cases of severe weather, one of my most troubling decisions has been to decide when we will cancel school. Sure, I have some general guidelines that aid me in my decision. I would more than likely cancel school if the official temperature in Broadus was -30 degrees or the wind chill exceeded -45 degrees. However, my greatest concern for student safety continues to be road conditions, which can be extremely dangerous even at much...

Thursday, February 15, 1990 Coyote makes quick visit A coyote, probably foraging town for food, made a quick visit to Broadus’ west end last Friday afternoon. The Chuck Millar family first noticed the animal as it crossed the field behind their Tastee Freez restaurant. “He apparently got the date of our lamb feed screwed up,” said Millar. The coyote then made quick inspections of the Sagebrush Market liquor store, the walkway in front of the Tastee Freez, the baseball field, and the alley behind the swimming pool. Pursued by Dave Richa...
